What kind of matter is jello
I don't know exactly how you defined a mixture and solution in class. I just did a search on the internet and not all web sites agree on which substances are mixtures and which are solutions so I'll tell you what I think the difference is: a solution is a mixture of a liquid like water and some other substance.
To be a solution though, the stuff mixed into the water has to evenly mix on its own. According to this, you might want to call Jello a solution because it is a mixture of a protein called collagen and water. But I would be a little careful about this. Let me tell you why. When you mix in the Jello powder with hot water you get gelatin. This gelatin is made of a protein called collagen , which is the same protein that makes up animal connective tissue.
In this state it is a solution and the proteins are constantly getting kicked around by the motion of the water molecules and so get mixed up pretty well.
As the water cools down, the collagen starts to combine the technical word is "aggregate". As it combines, it forms chains. Bite-sized knowledge for the hungrily curious. Feed Popular Liked Topics. The Answer Jell-O is a matrix of loosely-connected solid material collagen suspended within a liquid water.
Rate This Biscuit. It certainly does not fit the physical definition of a solid, a regular array of atoms or molecules. It doesn't fit the usual definition of a liquid either, because it bounces back from shear stresses, rather than flowing, even if they're prolonged. I think Tamara gave a pretty good description of what jello is. When you say "semisolid" what more does that tell you about how jello behaves?
You may wonder why I insist on this point. It's because in too many classrooms students are taught to learn names rather than to understand things. After a while, people sometimes forget that there's anything to know besides names. Follow-up on this answer. Slowly add 1. Starch particles become suspended in water — but too much water will create liquid. Begin typing your search term above and press enter to search. Press ESC to cancel.
