Camp provides his best work yet, mixing amazing beats, original lyrics, and nerdy references into one brilliant album. The studio quality track along with his major label debut provide good new music to attract new fans to the wonder that is Childish Gambino.

With the advent of Kanye West, hip-hop found itself wondering how the son of an English professor could be "real". Gambino has the same issues. His family moved out of an insalubrious area to prevent Glover falling into "the lifestyle". As a result of his suburbanness, his nerdiness, his liking for non-black music "the only black kid at the Sufjan concert" and his success, Gambino finds himself having to defend his "blackness" at every turn.

More precisely, on Camp he never stops prodding the dividing line between "hood shit" and "black shit" — his words on "Outside", the opening track. The rhymes ponder his childhood incontinence, as well as the unbridgeable rift between Glover and his favourite cousin, "the person I took sink baths with", left behind in the projects. What follows this auspicious beginning is a riveting album about race, class, opportunity, tribalism, love, the pitfalls of fame, comedy and "seriousness" — one that coexists quite happily with a potty-mouthed pop-rap record about sleeping with girls.

The album maintains some of the overweening humor of Donald Glover 's sitcom "Community", but Glover's exaggerated, cartoonish flow and overblown pop-rap production are enough to make Camp one of the most uniquely unlikable rap records of this year and most others. What's worse is how he uses heavy topics like race, masculinity, relationships, street cred, and "real hip-hop" as props to construct a false outsider persona.

On record, he paints himself as a misunderstood victim of cultural preconceptions who is obviously smarter and funnier than his primetime material suggests. Unfortunately, it's a position that holds up to absolutely no scrutiny whatsoever.

Glover's not doing himself any favors with a rap handle taken from the Wu-Tang Name Generator , but that'd be easy to overlook if Camp functioned as anything more than a series of similar one-note gags. On a song-by-song basis, he scripts a slightly off-brand, fictional version of Kanye West being played for laughs. We could talk about Glover's bloodlines all day, but Childish Gambino's paternity test traces straight back to "All Falls Down".
